Skelm: TypeScript agents without the usual complexity

Skelm is an open-source TypeScript library for building AI agents with Claude. No opaque abstractions or heavy frameworks.

Building a functional AI agent with TypeScript usually means an uncomfortable choice: use a high-level framework that abstracts everything until you don't understand what's happening, or write from scratch the tool loop, context management, and error handling. Skelm, released this week on GitHub, tries to occupy that middle ground.

The library has appeared on Hacker News with modest traction so far, placing it on the radar of those seeking lightweight alternatives before they become mainstream, not after. The project is from a solo developer (scottgl9) and is in an early stage.

What Skelm offers

Skelm describes itself as a way to build AI agents in TypeScript without losing your mind. In practical terms, the repository proposes an API that covers the essential building blocks for orchestrating models like Claude:

  • Tool definition with static typing from the start, no manual casting required
  • Agent-tool loop managed internally, but with clear extension points
  • Explicit context handling, no hidden state that complicates debugging
  • Direct integration with the Anthropic API, without intermediate layers that obscure the actual parameters sent to the model
The proposal isn't radically new—there are other projects with similar philosophy—but the focus on native TypeScript with strict typing responds to a recurring complaint in the community: official SDKs and generalist frameworks tend to relegate types to second-class citizens, creating friction in production projects.

Why it matters, with caveats

The ecosystem of tools for Claude agents has matured considerably. Anthropic maintains its own official SDK for TypeScript and JavaScript, and Claude Code offers native support for subagents and MCP servers. For teams already working in that stack, Skelm doesn't replace anything critical.

Where it can be useful is in more focused contexts: developers who want to build a small agent without installing Claude Code, projects that don't need full MCP servers, or simply those who prefer to read and understand the code they're running without a framework getting in the way. The readability of Skelm's source code, which at the time of writing is manageable for a single developer, makes that audit easier.

Timing is also relevant. With Claude Opus 4.7 and its 1M token context window now available, use cases for agents processing large information volumes have multiplied. That's created demand for lighter tools that don't impose unnecessary overhead when the bottleneck is elsewhere.

Obvious limitations

Let's be honest about the project's state. With a single contributor, no documented stable releases, and no active community yet, Skelm isn't an option for production right now. The usual risks apply: abandonment, breaking changes without warning, lack of support for bugs.

It also doesn't cover some pieces that make a real agent robust: there's no explicit mention of retry handling, rate limiting, observability, or integration with logging tools. These omissions aren't fatal for an alpha-phase project, but worth noting before building on top of it.

Who should look at it now

Skelm is mainly interesting to three profiles. First, TypeScript developers who want to understand from the ground up how an agent with Claude is built before adopting more complete solutions. Second, those evaluating whether it's worth contributing to an open-source project in this space. Third, teams that need a minimal foundation on which to build their own abstraction layer with full control.

For everyone else, Anthropic's official SDK and the ecosystem around Claude Code remain the route with the best effort-to-result ratio.

Our take: Skelm is the kind of project worth following without immediate high expectations. If the author maintains the pace and design philosophy, it could become a useful reference for those who prioritize simplicity over feature coverage. For now, a GitHub bookmark and patience.
