Petdex is a community gallery and toolchain for animated pixel-art mascots ("pets") designed to run inside AI coding agents, primarily Codex and Claude Code. It has three components: a public web gallery at petdex.dev where users browse and submit pets, a CLI (`npx petdex install <slug>`) that downloads a pet's `pet.json` and spritesheet into `~/.codex/pets/` and wires hooks into supported agents, and a macOS desktop floater built in Zig that overlays the pet on screen and reacts to agent activity in real time. Each pet is a standardized package consisting of a `pet.json` metadata file and a spritesheet rendered as an 8x9 grid of 192x208 px frames. The web platform runs on Next.js, Drizzle ORM, Postgres, and Clerk for authentication, while the CLI authenticates via OAuth and PKCE. A public REST manifest at `petdex.dev/api/manifest` lets third-party tools consume the full catalog, and 21 projects already build on it. Developers, hobbyist pixel artists, and anyone who wants a visual companion tied to their coding agent workflow are the primary audience.
