Editor's note

GitMCP is a remote MCP server that turns any GitHub repository or GitHub Pages site into a live documentation source accessible to AI coding assistants. By pointing an MCP client at a URL such as `gitmcp.io/{owner}/{repo}`, the assistant can fetch up-to-date documentation, source files, and code examples directly from GitHub rather than relying on potentially stale training data. It connects to Claude Desktop via the `mcp-remote` bridge and works equally with Cursor, Windsurf, VSCode, and Cline using simple JSON config entries. Two operating modes are available: a repo-specific URL that locks the assistant to one project, and a generic `gitmcp.io/docs` endpoint that dynamically targets whichever repository the conversation requires. A built-in smart search trims retrieved content to avoid excessive token consumption. The project is cloud-hosted with no installation or signup required, collects no personal data, and can be self-hosted. Developers working with niche, new, or rapidly evolving libraries stand to benefit most, as the tool directly addresses outdated API knowledge.
