PapersGPT is a JavaScript plugin for Zotero 8 and 9 that embeds AI chat directly into the reference manager, letting researchers query single or multiple PDFs from their library using a keyboard shortcut or toolbar button, then save the resulting insights as Zotero Notes. It connects to Claude (including Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6) alongside more than a dozen other models through direct API keys or via OpenRouter with a single credential. The plugin also exposes an MCP server so that any MCP-compatible client, including Claude Desktop and Claude Code, can query a user's personal Zotero library through the companion docsagent interface. A SKILL file can be loaded directly into Claude Code, Cursor, or Gemini CLI for agent-style access. The AutoPilot feature, currently in open beta with daily usage limits, automates batch processing of 100 or more papers overnight, running user-defined extraction prompts across an entire collection and writing structured findings back into Zotero Notes without manual intervention.
